Reykjavik Energy, in collaboration with several partners, funded the Carbfix Project in 2007 (www.carbfix.com).
The
project aims at developing safe, simple and economical methods and
technology for permanent CO2 mineral storage in basalts. The project is
now moving the CarbFix technology from the demonstration phase to a
general and economically viable complete CCS chain that can be used
throughout the world. The company recently received funding from the
European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under
grant agreements No. 764810 and 764760 for two projects to continue the
development of these technologies: Science for Clean Energy (S4CE) and
CarbFix2. To achieve the goals of the funded projects we invite
applications from highly self-motivated individuals for two positions
within the Department of Research and Development, which is responsible
for managing natural resources, innovation and technical development.
Research Scientists
The
aim of the research is to quantify and understand processes related to
re-injection of geothermal fluids and gases into the geothermal
reservoir of the Hellisheidi co-generation power plant in SW Iceland. To
this end, process flow data, a seismic dataset, fluid chemistry, tracer
data and well log data as well as modelling studies are to be employed.
The successful candidates will work as part of a team of several
researchers from Reykjavik Energy and other institutions and companies
involved in the S4CE and CarbFix2 projects.
Applications
Initial
appointment for both positions is for 24 months, and may be renewed
contingent upon satisfactory performance and fund availability. The
workplace is Reykjavik Energy headquarters located in Reykjavik,
Iceland. Positions are available as of January 2018. To ensure full
consideration, please send a letter of application and a full resume to
carbfixjobs@or.is by November 30, 2017. Applicants should clearly state
whether they are applying for positions 1 or 2. Questions and inquiries
should also be sent to carbfixjobs@or.is.
Reykjavik Energy is a public utility company providing; electricity, geothermal
water, cold water, sewage services and fibre-optic data connections.

Data processing of seismic data used to monitor induced seismicity related to injections to:
• trace injected fluid flow
• analyze operational functions that are likely to trigger seismic events
• revise operational procedures and traffic light system in use to minimize risk of induced seismicity
Contribute to the ongoing development and calibration of the Hengill geothermal reservoir model.
Qualifications
A M.Sc. or a PhD degree in geophysics or a related discipline is required.
Experience in seismic data processing. Geothermal and/or the oil & gas industry experience.
Excellent
written/verbal communication skills, including the ability to
communicate complex findings in a structured and clear manner to
technical and non-technical audiences.
Research Scientist 2
Development
and application of field scale reactive transport models to simulate
the fate of injected geothermal fluids and gases in the subsurface
including:
• Revision and incorporation of a thermodynamic dataset describing gas/water/rock reactions
• Calibration of hydrological parameters (porosity and permeability) to field data (injection and production rates, tracer data)
•
Recommendations on optimal long-term injection strategies to maximize
life time of reservoir and infrastructure and thereby lowering cost
Contribute to the ongoing development and calibration of the Hengill geothermal reservoir model.
Qualifications
A M.Sc. or a Ph.D. degree in hydrology, geosciences, geochemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline is required.
Experience
in conceptual and numerical modeling of hydrological and/or geochemical
processes in subsurface systems with a good understanding of
thermo-kinetic approaches and coupled thermo-hydro-chemical (THC)
processes.
Geothermal and/or the oil & gas industry experience.
Excellent
written/verbal communication skills, including the ability to
communicate complex findings in a structured and clear manner to
technical and non-technical audiences.
Did you know that 90% of Icelandic homes are heated with geothermal water?
We provide 2/3 of that.
